READY TO READ
Help support our Early Childhood Literacy Program where every first grader in the district receives a stuffed puppy to practice their reading skills with throughout the school year.

Become a subscribing member and amplify your impact.  For as little as $10 a month you can provide puppies and reading incentives to these 1st grade students in LPOSD.

Research is clear: If children cannot read proficiently by the end of third grade, they face daunting hurdles to success in school and beyond. The earlier we can help, the greater the ripple effect and the more cost-efficient.

Ready to Read is simple. Motivate kids to read with a reading “companion” (their non-judgemental plush puppy).

HOW IT WORKS
It all starts with the excitement of “Adoption Day” which is a complete surprise to the students and looks like this:

Along with the puppy, kids use their reading log to track how often they read to their pup. The goal is to read for 20 minutes a day. As they earn points for more reading, they win prizes and treats for their puppy.

THE IMPACT

Practice makes pawfect: Our school district has outperformed the state average, and students grew an average of 30 percent from fall to spring on reading scores. This first-grade reading initiative has been a PAFE teacher grant since 2012 and was approved as part of the Early Childhood Literacy program by the Board of Directors in 2022.

You can help us expand this program.
